In just a few weeks time, we’ll be opening the doors to our second-ever Nicer Tuesdays event in New York. Branching out from its home in London, the stateside iteration brings all of the usual creativity and community of Nicer Tuesdays, this time to Manhattan's East Village.
We’ve got a stellar line-up ready and waiting to take to the stage. On 24 October, we will be welcoming Sydney-born comedic graphic designer Elliot Ulm, beloved local illustrator Ping Zhu, and renowned photographer Andre D. Wagner. Read on to find out what you can expect from each of these brilliant creatives.
In a slight switch-up from our first Nicer Tuesdays New York, this month’s event will take place at The Cooper Union in Manhattan, a well-known venue for creative events in the city. It’s seated, so remember to get there early to guarantee a spot and have time to grab a drink and a snack beforehand – unfortunately, these aren’t allowed in the seating area. Doors will open at 6pm and the talks will begin shortly afterwards. Tickets are $22 + fees.
Please be aware that photography and filming may be taken at this event for marketing and promotional purposes. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed, please speak to our team on the day. Also, if you are in need of disability access, please email [email protected] so we can arrange assistance with the venue team.
Street photography sits at the core of New York’s creative culture. A city bustling with action, iconic architecture and even more iconic characters, it’s a place ripe for off-the-cuff photography, though few do it better than Andre D. Wagner. Using trademark black-and-white form, Andre uses his lens to explore themes of race, class and cultural identity, making his work as pertinent in commentary as it is striking in visuals. Alongside his street photography, Andre has been commissioned by the most respected American publications, from The New Yorker to Vogue, and at October’s Nicer Tuesdays he’ll be sharing what it takes to establish yourself in New York’s celebrated photography scene.
Australian designer Elliot Ulm specialises in the kind of meta, self-referential design that other designers love for its sheer relatability. From funny takes on awkward client relationships to the woes of paying for expensive online tools and subscriptions, his down-to-earth brand of humour – communicated through beautifully rendered memes – has earned him a loyal fanbase on social media. At Nicer Tuesdays, Elliot will be talking about how he seamlessly blends humour and design, how he makes a living without having any obvious clients, and what, behind the comedy, are his real thoughts on the design industry.
Seattle-born illustrator Ping Zhu has a truly adaptable style that has won her a huge fanbase as well as a broad range of clients and commissions. From producing editorial pieces for leading newspapers such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal to illustrating children’s books like The Strange Birds of Flannery O’Connor, she’s never one to pigeonhole her practice. Playful and painterly, her drawings bring personality to any subject she chooses. At Nicer Tuesdays, Ping will discuss a recurring personal project that she’s been working on every year for the past five years, and how this helps balance out the commercial side of her practice, as well as providing some general advice to young creatives out there – tips she wishes she’d been given at the start of her career.
