Hark! The Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared website is a hub for all its brilliant weirdness

A run-in with Netflix execs, lots of bickering and a few punches nearly thwarted DHMIS’ latest creative instalment.

The hit multimedia puppet show Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared (DHMIS) from Blinkink, and directors Becky Sloan and Joe Pelling has come full circle with a new website – published some 13 years after Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared was first launched on YouTube.

“We wanted a place for people outside of the UK to see the Channel 4 show and for reasons we simply cannot talk about, Netflix were not interested,” Becky, Joe, and Will tell It’s Nice That. “If you must know, they wanted to change the name of the show to Just a Quick Bite, and have all the characters re-voiced by The Netflix executives! We had to put our foot down!” If this is to be believed, a brand spanking new website for the Bafta award-winning Channel 4 series was the natural next step for the extended Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared universe. Gather around and hear its siren song (in the video below).

Serving as a hub for not only every episode they’ve created but also official merchandise, BTS content and fan responses, we’ve been assured that users with a strong internet connection will have a maximum (and minimum) of eight seconds to click between pages before being strong-armed off the site. “‘Super fans or ‘Fans Plus’ as we call them now, will be able to purchase a pass to watch the series and get official merchandise from the show.” They add: “There are also a few hidden gems knocking around the site.”

Collaborative in nature, DHMIS has once again partnered with many of the illustrators, makers and artists who had worked on the show in the creation of some exclusive merch, working with the likes of Laura Bird, Berto Fojo, Dan Britt, Stella Murphy, and Connor Chung. “We also worked with a really good team of designers at Really Quite”, an interactive design and development studio that created the website itself. “It took us ages, and we all started bickering about it,” they end. “Somebody threw a punch and lawyers were brought in. Ultimately we realised that we could not let a website come between us.”
